What are the benefits of CBD on our body and mind?

Cannabis, hemp, weed?

Everyone has heard of hemp, hashish, "weed" or even "weed". These terms, more or less valorizing, all define one and the same thing: cannabis. However, although we all have some knowledge of it, do we really know what this plant is? What is it made of? What are its effects on our body and mind? And above all, should we be wary of it or, on the contrary, be interested in it?

Cannabis is a plant native to Central and South Asia that has a notable effect on our metabolism. It is divided into three distinct subspecies: sativa, indica and ruderalis and consists of more than 60 cannabinoids (family of molecules acting on our body), the two main ones being THC and CBD.

THC and CBD, what about them?

The difference between THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD(Cannabidiol) is not small. Indeed, although their molecular structures are close, each of these components of cannabis has a particular function and independent of each other. THC, for example, (the most studied cannabinoid until today) causes a psychotropic effect on every human being. When we consume it, we feel a certain sensation of drunkenness and euphoria that distracts us from reality and side effects, such as paranoia, can be observed.

CBD, on the other hand, is used as a therapeutic cannabinoid with multiple virtues. Indeed, although it is less present than THC in cannabis, this component helps to treat many things, such as: convulsions, inflammation, anxiety, nausea, schizophrenia, dystonia, sleep disorders and cramps. In addition, it slows the growth of cancer cells, reduces acne and eczema, slows skin ageing and can even be used as a dietary supplement (as it contains numerous vitamins, minerals and omegas).

CBD consumption

To date, no harmful effects have been reported from CBD consumption and the relaxing sensation it provides does not imply a psychotropic effect. In fact, the compound is very well tolerated by the human body, which assimilates its virtues through two main cannabinoid receptors. On the one hand, CB1, present in the bones, muscles, fat mass, skin and joints, is concentrated in the nervous system, and more specifically in memory, emotions and pain sensation. On the other hand CB2, which is concentrated in the spleen and more precisely in the immune cells.

In addition, CBD has several terpenes (natural hydrocarbons) with significant benefits. These include myrcene, which is used as an antispamodic, bactericide, sedative and anxiolytic; limonene, which is used as an antiseptic, muscle relaxant and antitumour; and linalool, which is used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, sedative and antifungal agent.

Regarding the way CBD is consumed, there are three different ways: vaporisation (by air), ingestion (by mouth) and skin application (externally). As a result, there are many derivative products such as oils, creams, capsules, teas, etc.

Nowadays, although research on CBD is less advanced than that on THC, this molecule is convincing more and more people, as its use has no harmful side effects. Like Thérèse David, manager of a communications firm, who adopted this means of medication a few years ago to reduce the pain caused by her chemotherapy, many individuals are being seduced every day by the great virtues and multiple possibilities of using cannabidiol.
