Why do pensioners support the marijuana industry in California?

The Californian marijuana industry

Marijuana, the herb that has acquired a bad reputation over the years, has several health benefits.

Prohibited by federal law, 29 U.S. states, including New York and the District of Columbia, have recently approved the medical use of cannabis. Many people were surprised by the legalization of cannabis in the state of California, especially seniors.

In the United States, the fastest growing segment of the population using cannabis is the elderly. Between 2006 and 2013, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, cannabis use among people over the age of 65 increased by 250%. Every day, ten thousand people reach the age of sixty-five, according to the Pew Research Center, and more and more seniors are trying it to improve their health and well-being.

This group includes two types of seniors: those who have never tried cannabis and those who smoked a joint at university.

An increasing number of older people are discovering cannabis, adding a new dimension to the legal marijuana industry. Indeed, the elderly are the most curious and cautious of all cannabis consumers. It is worth noting that this population is more interested in the therapeutic use of cannabis than in the recreational use.

Older people are increasingly turning to cannabis to relieve aches and pains. In some retirement and nursing homes, it has been adopted as an alternative to prescription drugs as it is not addictive and has few side effects.

Although much research has been conducted on marijuana, very little of it focuses explicitly on its use among the elderly. All over the world, the number of elderly users is increasing, not only in the United States, but also in countries like Israel where the elderly have been treated with medical cannabis for years. Americans for Safe Access has also helped to open a research centre in the Czech Republic to assess the impact of marijuana use among the elderly.

Over the years, cannabis has been shown to be effective in treating medical conditions such as neuropathic pain, severe muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis, involuntary weight loss, vomiting and nausea due to chemotherapy. The herb has also helped many people combat mental disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia and Parkinson's disease. Older people have also found that using CBD products has helped them cope with the arthritic pain that comes with age.

Marijuana is certainly a potential alternative to prescription drugs that have dangerous side effects. The side effects of chemotherapy, arthritis, glaucoma, chronic pain and malnutrition are all treated with cannabis.

However, more research needs to be done on its medical benefits. Until then, there will probably always be unfavourable preconceptions.

California's marijuana industry has a bright future and continues to grow in all walks of life, from students to retirees.

For the time being, the public is free to use cannabis as an alternative, even though there is no official government-approved evidence of its benefits yet.
